Education

    Global Spark

    Global Spark is a growing nursery and primary school located in the coastal village of Bwejuu. With around 80 students and a passionate team of English-speaking teachers, the school provides a supportive learning environment where children are encouraged to build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support teachers with classroom learning and early childhood education

    • Encourage creativity through games, storytelling, arts, and interactive activities

    • Build meaningful relationships while helping create a positive learning environment for every child

    Location: Bwejuu, Zanzibar (Approximately 15 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:30am – 12pm

    Miza Wa Miza School

    Miza Wa Miza School is a small community primary school in Bwejuu providing education for around 100 students. With small class sizes and a welcoming atmosphere, volunteers have the opportunity to work closely with teachers while helping children grow academically, socially, and personally.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support teachers with classroom learning and daily educational activities

    • Encourage confidence through games, reading, and creative learning experiences

    • Provide additional support for students who benefit from individual encouragement

    Location: Bwejuu, Zanzibar (10–15 minute walk from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8am – 12pm

    Super Genius Academy

    Super Genius Academy is an early childhood school in Bwejuu that combines classroom learning with creativity, outdoor exploration, and play-based education. The school encourages children to learn through curiosity, imagination, and hands-on experiences in a safe and nurturing environment.

    • Support teachers through classroom learning, storytelling, music, and creative activities

    Kitogani Primary School

    Kitogani Primary School provides education for more than 600 students while promoting active learning through both academic and sporting opportunities. Volunteers work alongside teachers to support classroom learning while encouraging teamwork, confidence, and healthy lifestyles through sport and physical activity.

    Kitogani Hospital

    Kitogani Hospital provides essential healthcare services to communities across southern Zanzibar, offering volunteers and interns the opportunity to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals in a busy local hospital. The hospital supports patients across a range of departments, with a particular focus on maternal and newborn care.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals with daily patient care under supervision

    • Observe clinical practice while assisting with maternity, newborn, and general hospital services

    • Help create a positive patient experience through practical support, organisation, and compassionate care

    Location: Kitogani, Zanzibar (Approximately 20 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | From 8am, approximately 8-hour shifts

    Ideal For: Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health

    Healthcare Placement Disclaimer

    Healthcare placements are intended for students and qualified professionals with a relevant medical or allied health background. The level of participation will depend on your qualifications, previous experience, the policies of the host facility, and the direction of your supervising healthcare team.

    Participants are expected to:

    • Work under the supervision of qualified medical professionals at all times.

    • Follow the instructions and protocols of supervising doctors, nurses, and hospital staff.

    • Observe, assist, and learn within the scope of their experience and approved responsibilities.

    • Respect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times. Photography or video of patients is strictly prohibited unless expressly authorised by the healthcare facility for an approved purpose.

    • Comply with all hospital policies, infection prevention procedures, and professional standards.

    Healthcare placements are designed to provide valuable cross-cultural learning and professional development opportunities. They are not intended to replace the role of qualified healthcare professionals or provide independent clinical practice.

Conservation & Community Development

    Green Lion Turtle Rehabilitation & Sanctuary

    Located in the coastal village of Makunduchi, Green Lion Turtle Rehabilitation & Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles and preserving Zanzibar's unique marine ecosystem. Working alongside local conservationists, the sanctuary combines turtle rehabilitation with environmental education and community engagement to create lasting conservation outcomes.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support turtle rehabilitation through daily care, habitat maintenance, and conservation activities

    • Assist with environmental initiatives including beach clean-ups, nesting site monitoring, and community awareness programs

    • Learn about marine conservation while contributing to the protection of Zanzibar's coastal ecosystems

    Location: Makunduchi, Zanzibar (Approximately 30 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | Times vary depending on conservation activities

    Furaha Wanawake (Women's Empowerment)

    Furaha Wanawake is a community-led women's empowerment initiative based in Paje that creates sustainable income opportunities through handmade natural products. Using locally harvested seaweed and native plants, the women produce eco-friendly soaps, oils, and skincare products while building economic independence, preserving traditional knowledge, and promoting environmental sustainability.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Work alongside local women producing sustainable, handmade natural products

    • Support skills development, product preparation, and community enterprise initiatives

    • Help promote women's entrepreneurship through storytelling, marketing, and community engagement

    Location: Paje, Zanzibar (Approximately 15 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8am - 12/1pm depending on daily schedule (tides etc)
