Education

    Kandwi Primary School

    Kandwi Primary School provides nursery and primary education for around 500 children in one of Zanzibar's rural communities. With a strong focus on foundational learning and personal development, the school works to create engaging educational opportunities while supporting children with limited access to learning resources.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support teachers with classroom learning across English, Maths, and creative subjects

    • Encourage confidence through educational games, sport, and interactive activities

    • Help create an engaging learning environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive

    Location: Kandwi, Zanzibar (Approximately 5 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8am – 12pm

    Mlilile Primary School

    Established in 2019, Mlilile Primary School provides early childhood and primary education for more than 120 students in Matemwe East. With a strong emphasis on learning, personal growth, and community involvement, the school offers volunteers the opportunity to become part of a welcoming and supportive teaching environment.

    How You'll Contribute

    • Support teachers with classroom learning and daily educational activities

    • Encourage children through play, sport, and creative learning experiences

    • Help create a positive environment where students can grow academically and socially

    Location: Matemwe East, Zanzibar (Approximately 20 minutes from accommodation)

    Mwinyi Sauti Nursery School

    Founded in 2010, Mwinyi Sauti Nursery School provides early childhood education for young children within the Pwani Mchangani community. The school focuses on creating a structured, nurturing environment where children develop confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning from an early age.

    • Support teachers with play-based learning and early childhood education

    • Encourage creativity through arts, music, games, and outdoor activities

    • Build positive relationships that help children feel supported and engaged

    Sabine Nursery School

    Sabine Nursery School provides a caring early learning environment for children aged 3–6 years in the coastal village of Pwani Mchangani. With its close-knit community and beachside location, the school focuses on helping children develop confidence, curiosity, and essential learning skills through play and exploration.

    Kilimajuu Primary School

    Established in 2010, Kilimajuu Primary School provides quality education for more than 200 students from nursery through to primary level. Volunteers work alongside local teachers to support learning while encouraging creativity, confidence, and active participation in school life.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support classroom learning across a range of primary school subjects

    • Encourage participation through sport, games, and creative activities

    • Help provide additional encouragement and individual support for students

    Location: Matemwe, Zanzibar (Approximately 10 minutes from accommodation)

    Mfuru Matonga School

    Established in 2004, Mfuru Matonga School is a government primary school educating almost 700 students from kindergarten through to Standard Seven. Serving one of Zanzibar's growing rural communities, the school provides volunteers with the opportunity to support local teachers while contributing to a positive and engaging learning environment.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support teachers with literacy, numeracy, and classroom learning activities

    • Encourage confidence through sport, creative projects, and educational games

    • Help provide additional support for students who benefit from individual encouragement

    Location: Matemwe, Zanzibar (Approximately 25 minutes from accommodation)

Healthcare & Medical Internships

    Kivunge District Hospital

    Kivunge District Hospital is the main referral hospital serving Zanzibar's East Coast and operates under the Ministry of Health in partnership with Mnazi Mmoja Hospital. Providing a broad range of medical services across multiple specialist departments, the hospital plays a vital role in delivering healthcare to surrounding communities while offering valuable learning opportunities for medical students and healthcare professionals.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Work alongside doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals during ward rounds and daily clinical care

    • Observe and support patient care across departments including Maternity, Paediatrics, Emergency, Surgery, and Physiotherapy

    • Gain practical experience while contributing to the delivery of healthcare in a busy regional hospital

    Location: Kivunge (Approximately 20 minutes from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday | From 8am, approximately 8-hour shifts

    Ideal For: Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health

    Healthcare Placement Disclaimer

    Healthcare placements are intended for students and qualified professionals with a relevant medical or allied health background. The level of participation will depend on your qualifications, previous experience, the policies of the host facility, and the direction of your supervising healthcare team.

    Participants are expected to:

    • Work under the supervision of qualified medical professionals at all times.

    • Follow the instructions and protocols of supervising doctors, nurses, and hospital staff.

    • Observe, assist, and learn within the scope of their experience and approved responsibilities.

    • Respect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times. Photography or video of patients is strictly prohibited unless expressly authorised by the healthcare facility for an approved purpose.

    • Comply with all hospital policies, infection prevention procedures, and professional standards.

    Healthcare placements are designed to provide valuable cross-cultural learning and professional development opportunities. They are not intended to replace the role of qualified healthcare professionals or provide independent clinical practice.

    Future Stars Zanzibar

    Future Stars Zanzibar uses football as a platform to inspire confidence, leadership, and opportunity for young people across the Pwani Mchangani community. Founded in Arusha and later expanded to Zanzibar, the programme combines sport with mentorship, helping children and teenagers develop teamwork, resilience, discipline, and important life skills both on and off the field.

    How You'll Contribute:

    • Support football coaching sessions, training activities, and youth development programmes

    • Encourage teamwork, confidence, and positive leadership through sport and mentorship

    • Assist with community events, match days, and activities that bring young people together

    Location: Pwani Mchangani, Zanzibar (5-minute walk from accommodation)

    Typical Schedule: Monday – Saturday | Times vary depending on training sessions and community activities
