Volunteering on Zanzibar

A collage combining a smiling woman with a basket on her head, a monkey, a man playing a drum, tropical plants, a historic building, a lighthouse, and a coastal village with boats.

Our Zanzibar operations are based across three locations, each with its own volunteer accommodation and network of trusted community partners.

From the historic streets of Stone Town to the coastal villages of the East Coast and the beaches of the South East Coast, every location offers a different perspective of Zanzibar while providing the same high level of local support, cultural immersion, and professionally managed volunteer placements.

Why Zanzibar?

Zanzibar combines rich cultural heritage, vibrant coastal communities, and one of East Africa's most distinctive island environments.

While best known for its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, the island is also home to a diverse network of schools, hospitals, conservation initiatives, and grassroots organisations working to strengthen their communities. Combined with a rich Swahili history and welcoming culture, it offers a unique setting for meaningful volunteer experiences.

Zanzibar Highlights:

  • UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town

  • Tropical island climate, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs

  • A unique blend of Swahili, Arabic, African, and European influences

  • Fresh seafood, spice farms, and vibrant local markets

  • Marine conservation and coastal community initiatives

  • Easy access to forests, beaches, traditional villages, and weekend adventures

Beyond the placement

Live like a local, explore at your own pace, and experience everything Zanzibar has to offer.

Outside working hours, volunteers often explore historic Stone Town, snorkel coral reefs, visit spice farms, discover hidden beaches and traditional villages, while taking part in Swahili lessons, cooking classes, cultural activities, and weekend adventures organised by our local team.

Combined with comfortable accommodation and a welcoming volunteer community, Zanzibar quickly becomes a place many people proudly call their second home.
